Do you have pain in the side of your head, around your temples? Are you over 60 years old? This may be a sign of temporal arteritis sometimes call giant cell arteritis. It can be serious, it may lead to blindness. Many times patients will present to a chiropractic clinic with this condition. A proper diagnosis must be made and a referral to the patient’s primary care physician is needed.

The most common treatment for this condition is large dosages of corticosteroids for one to two years. The symptoms usually reside quickly once a diagnosis and treatment is made. Often a biopsy of the area is needed.

It is important to see your medical doctor or chiropractor if you are over the age of 60 and have these symptoms. Left untreated the patient may develop permanent blindness.

There are complications to taking large doses of steroids but unfortunately at this time there are few if any other treatments for this condition.

If you have headache and neck pain, consider chiropractic care. If you have any similar symptoms of temporal arteritis you should see your MD or Chiropractor immediately.

A recent study in the Journal of Internal Medicine demonstrated that chiropractic manipulation was more effective than medication for treatment of neck pain. (1)

This is great news for many people suffer from both chronic and acute neck pain. It is not however earth shattering news. I have been treating neck pain in Rolla MO and St. James MO area now for seventeen years with great result using chiropractic manipulation.

I understand though that many people may have a fear of having their neck adjusted. I too have seen the movies where the bad guy grabs the person and twist his neck and breaks it. This is far from the truth. Cervical spine adjusting is gentle. There is little twisting and more often than not the patient's response is very positive.

If you live in the Rolla MO area and have neck pain. You should give us a call, if you are alittle apprehensive just come by and talk with us. We will discus your case and give options. You will find that it is a pleasant experience. If chiropractic isn't for you we will direct you in a manner that might be more suited for you. Either way its time to stop hurting and doing the things you love.

A recent study has concluded that steroid injections may not be effective for treating back pain. 133 patients with back pain were given a treatment regimen of either steroid injections, saline injections or a placebo. After twelve weeks there was little difference in any of the patients back pain.(1)

So patients yet again are left to wonder what treatment may or may not be appropriate for them. I have found many patients have benefited from steroid injections. So in my practice I always advise the patients to talk to their medical doctor and consider steroid injections as a part of their treatment plan.

I'm a chiropractor and I love helping people out of pain and on the road to better health. I have seen many studies that proclaim Chiropractic care does wonders for patients then tomorrow another study says it doesn't. So I take every study with a grain of salt, and I can testify that I have seen patients get benefit from steroid injections. Many patients have so much inflammation they need the help from meds or injections in addition to Chiropractic manipulation.

If you have sciatica or lower back pain you should come see us and get back to doing what you love. Chiropractic is safe and effective without a lot of side effects. If you need medications to help with the pain you should talk to your doctor. You will find out that sometimes both Chiropractic and medicine make for a faster recovery time.

If you are in the Rolla MO or St. James MO area and you have back pain. Give us a call. We are easy to talk to and you wil find out how great it feels to be out of pain.

Do you suffer from headaches or migraines? Many people do. Chiropractic manipulation is very helpful at treating the cause of headaches. At Moreland Chiropractic clinic, in Rolla MO, we have been treating people with headaches for years with great success. We find many people suffer from headaches do to a loss of the normal lordodic curve of the cervical spine. This is very treatable. Often this problem goes missed on the patients initial x-rays. I find many times that patient has been subjected to many diagnostic test that have all came up with no hard conclussion as to why the patient had headaches in the first palce. When we go back and examine the patients first test this problem was there, overlooked. The patient is frustrated and has been subjected to medicines that have not helped, often for years.

We like to utilize a treatment known as SOT. It is a gentle adjustment that restores the normal curve to the cervical spine. We also ask our patients to perform McKenzie extension exercies at home. This exercise helps strengthen the spine and also restore the normal lordodic cure of the cervical spine. This treament is oftne combined with stim and massage.

I am always amazed at the positive response when a celebrity endorses Chiropractic. This endorsement creates changes in the perception of Chiropractic care. I have treated patients in Rolla Mo. and St. James Mo for years now and nothing starts a bigger buzz about Chiropractic than Oprah or Dr. Oz.

So I shouldn’t be shocked that more people are looking into Chiropractic care now that Dr. Oz has given his thumbs up for Chiropractic care. I guess I am more amazed at the thought that people have been benefiting from chiropractic care for a hundred years, and one five minute segment on the Dr. Oz show is what is needed to give chiropractic care credibility.

Chiropractic care is safe and effective for treating your pain.

I’ve been asked this question alot more recently... Do I adjust or treat on the first visit?

The answer is yes. It is rare that I don’t. Sometimes there is an indication that an adjustment should not be performed. In these cases I refer them for x-rays that are read by a Medical Doctor/Radiologist then a treatment plan is offered. Our office is in the business of treating pain and getting people back in the game of life. We don’t make you come to classes that teach you to be dependent on a Chiropractor once a month for the rest of your life. The practice of not adjusting on the first visit is a marketing tool taught by practice management groups that help the chiropractor make money. I have never belonged to or utilized a practice management course or service.

My philosophy is when you give people great service they will come to you and refer their friends to you.

If you are hurting and want you to get back to doing what you love, give us a call, no sales pitches required.

We have been providing service to the good people of Rolla MO and Phelps County since 1995.

How do I find a great Chiropractor?

Tips for finding a great Chiropractor:

1: Ask your doctor. Your family doctor knows you and your community. He or she will be able to guide you to a Chiropractor that is reputable and experienced. Many medical doctors go to Chiropractors for their back pain.

2: Ask your doctor’s staff or nurses. Nurses often have back issues themselves. Being a nurse is an intense job that takes its toll on a spine. Many nurses utilize chiropractors regularly. Nurses are a valuable source for a referral to any chiropractor, dentist, optometrist, etc.

3: Ask your friends or co-workers.

4: Choose experience. The longer a Chiropractor has been in the community, and in practice, the better chance you will have a positive experience. Find a Chiropractor with at least ten years of experience and preferably a board certification. These are doctors of chiropractic who have completed extensive post-doctoral education in non-surgical orthopedics, neurology, diagnostics etc. and have passed a specialty examination to become board certified chiropractic orthopedists by The Academy of Chiropractic Orthopedics or The American Chiropractic Board of Sports Physicians. These chiropractors have to maintain their board certification yearly with the certifing board in addition to maintaining their license with the state board of chiropractic examiners.

These are the best ideas I have for finding a great Chiropractor.

Things you may want to avoid.

A: The discounted initial consultation or a bait and switch. If the person promised you one price and you get to the office and find out there are more fees.

B: The spinal scan scam, this is where a person sets up a screening at a craft fair or local business using a computerized scanner and tells every person they have a bad back. If your back is not hurting this is awesome. Keep up the good work. The Chiropractor will be there when you need them.

Quick update here. If your lower back hurts and the pain goes down your leg. You probably have sciatica. Don't be alarmed. It is often easily treated. I utilize flexion distraction technique or disc decompression depending on which the patient responds to the best. It can take four to six weeks to treat. Many get well quickly without the side effects of drugs or the risk of surgery. If you have questions call us or ask your medical doctor about us and which chiropractor they recommend or even go too.

Chiropractor wants too x-ray me before he see's me. Why? I just woke up with a sore back, nothing bad happened.

X-rays and Chiropractors. My philosophy is take a great history and do a focused examination. Then decide if the patient needs to be exposed to x-radiation. Most of the patients that come to our office never need x-rays. Most get incredible results and save themselves money and exposure to radiation.

I've heard it before you wouldn't want a mechanic to work on your car without looking under the hood. Nice saying but you are not a car. Doctors are trained to take a history and an exam, then decide what test, if any, need to be ordered. If we decide you need to be x-rayed we order them. We have ordering privileges at PCRMC, St. Johns, and Rolla Radiology. The x-ray units at these facilities are high frequency units that use much less radiation than any small unit in a small chiropractic office. The x-rays are then read by a Medical doctor that specializes in radiology. The pictures or films then show up immediately on our office computers where we can look at them with you and your family.

Doing x-rays this way is the best way. You are exposed to less radiation. The films are read by an MD. Your MD can see them on their systems. If you need a referral you won't have to be x-rayed a second time. You are confident in your diagnosis. This makes for happy patients with healthy back and wallets.

The real reason most Chiropractic offices order x-rays are for financial gain. They are great money makers if you make every person get them. Its wrong. Patients don't need blood work, MRI's, PET scans, Ultra sounds, exploratory surgery, or x-rays every time they see a doctor. They need the doctors ear, the doctors attention. It's what is wrong with our broken down health system, the dollar comes before the patient.

Just a quick word on headaches. I hate them. Who doesn't? So why do people live with them when they are so easy to treat. Many if not most headaches are from the loss of the normal curve of the spine.

Fact is you neck shouldn't be straight, it is meant to have a gentle curve. When we lose this curve, we get headaches. Leave the neck straight even longer and degenerative changes occur and disc begin to deteriorate.

There is a simple fix with chiropractic care. It is quick.

Well here it is one more reason to choose Chiropractic care for treatment of herniated disc as opposed to surgery. The Ohio State Workers Compensation Board reviewed 1450 patients with herniated disc that underwent surgery. Only 29 percent of these patients ever returned to work. This information was further noted by The European Guidelines for Management of Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain in December of 2010. So the fact is that 74 percent of of people who have these surgeries don’t work again.

I have to say it has been my clinical experience that many people are easily treated with Chiropractic Care. Most not only go back to work but few miss any work at all.

Our office treats Lumbar spine disc easily with Cox Flexion distraction adjustments. These hot summer days make patients prone to a condition known as torticolis or wry neck syndrome. The patient wakes up of a morning with severe neck pain. Often they cannot turn their head. It is caused by sleeping in one uncomfortable or unnatural position for to long. Treatment is easy with chiropractic care. Spinal manipulation frees up the subluxated or fixed vertebrae, providing quick relief from the pain.

	Zombie back pain and you.

In these troubling times and with the Government setting out techniques to deal with a possible Zombie apocalypse, you can well imagine the number of patients asking me how to deal with back pain that is caused by Zombies. Zombie back pain can be similar to any back pain. Let’s say you’ve had a Zombie attack and in your effort to escape you lifted pushed the Zombie off yourself or your friend. Its important ice this initial injury for ten to fifteen minutes every two to four hours. If you are suffering pain down your legs or arms you may have Zombie induced pinched nerve. Chiropractors are well trained to treat this type of injury and you should make an appointment as soon as possible.

Remember when lifting a Zombie off you or a friend it is important to lift with your legs and try not to twist. It is advised to get away from the Zombie if possible. Being under Zombie bombardment can be stressful and cause headaches as well. Once again chiropractic care for Zombie induced headaches can be very effective. We utilize a gentle technique to restore the normal curve of the cervical spine that may be damaged during a Zombie attack.

The following article was published in The Spine Journal. Enjoy.

Back pain is the leading reason that people seek out the help of a chiropractor, and it is estimated that 80 to 90% of people in the United States will experience some kind of back pain in their lives. Most patients with low back pain (LBP) will find their symptoms improve after a few weeks or months, and chiropractors can assist this process by identifying pain issues in the early stages and helping patients stay active during their recovery. However, in approximately 10% of cases, acute low back pain develops into a chronic condition, one that lasts six months or more. Chronic low back pain is very difficult to treat, and it can have a substantial impact on a patient's quality of life.

Research is beginning to uncover the factors that can determine who develops chronic low back pain, and these findings can have great relevance in determining a treatment path. In a study published in The Spine Journal, researchers from the Netherlands merged the results of three randomized controlled trials of a total 628 workers on medical leave for LBP. The trials drew from a wide base of professions, comparing results among airline, healthcare, industrial, construction, and office workers.

The researchers considered physical factors, including age and gender of participants, pain intensity, disability level, the amount of heavy lifting required at their job, as well as psychological factors like overall job satisfaction and fear of movement triggered by past pain experiences, also known as kinesiophobia. The study followed up with patients after one year to determine which patients had developed chronic conditions.

After reviewing their results, the researchers developed a short list of the most significant factors in predicting who will develop chronic low back pain. Patients who did not experience a decrease in pain intensity or their level of disability within the first three months of the onset of pain were most likely to develop a chronic condition. Those who started out with a higher pain intensity and those with a higher kinesiophobia where also determined to be at higher risk. Previous studies have suggested that patients who do more heavy lifting at work are at higher risk of developing a chronic condition, but this study could not confirm that this was as great a predictor as the other factors.

These findings have important implications for the treatment of low back pain. The results suggest that health practitioners, including chiropractors, should monitor the pain intensity and disability levels of patients with acute LBP frequently within the first three months of treatment. Patients whose symptoms don't change during this critical initial period may require more targeted treatment. In addition, initially intense pain levels can lead to a fear of movement that significantly impedes recovery, so care providers must also be proactive about reducing kinesiophobia in their low back pain patients.

Beware of spinal scan scam. Years ago snake oil salesmen would travel to town selling their elixirs and potions, preying on people’s misfortune. Today unfortunately it is the spinal scan scam, these are marketing tools used by Chiropractors to get people to come to the office. I myself purchased one last year for use in my office, a surface EMG. Its sits collecting dust as I write this blog now. I found that it was totally unreliable; it never gives useful results on patients. I was disappointed to say the least.

As you read the marketing material for these machines they are intended to boost your patient volume and maximize your income. The tests reveal red and green lines drawn on flashy big screens. An elaborate print out is given to the person with information on why they must seek care immediately.

Do these test really give you any reliable information though? Insurance companies and neurologists, for the most part, like me believe they do not. The test is not covered by any insurance company. So I asked myself, is it the machine, or is it the way it is used?

The most common use is at a marketing event, lawn and garden show, etc. Another is to go to a small office or business and test all the employees. The problem with this testing is that everyone tested has a bad back. They all need immediate care to restore their health, red flags and lines are raised. How can this be? Does every person have a horrible back that requires immediate attention?

The answer is no. I love being a Chiropractor; I enjoy helping people with their spinal problems. The fact is, if you are not in pain you probably don’t need to be in a Chiropractic office. If you do have a back problem you most likely can benefit from being in a Chiropractic office.

If you back doesn’t bother you this is awesome. Eat right, exercise and stay healthy. A Chiropractor will be there when you need one.

If your back does hurt find an URAC board certified Chiropractor with at least ten years’ experience. Talk to your friends, family, or your medical doctor. This is the best way to find a great Chiropractor.

If your getting headaches and nothing seems to help, its time to see us. Headaches are often simple to treat. Most are caused by a simple loss in the normal curve of the spine. With adjustments and home exercise the normal curve is restored and the headaches subside.

The weather is turning for the better so get out there and enjoy it.

A question I get asked a lot is what's the difference in a Chiropractors education and that of a medical doctors. The answer is there are more similarities than not. Chiropractors have more class time while MD's have more time in residencies and internships. For this reason it is best to pick a Chiropractor with years of experience. Look for a Chiropractor with a URAC board certification and ten years experience. Ask around, talk to people you work with or your medical doctor when choosing a Chiropractor. Word of mouth is always the best. You wouldn't pick your neurologist from the local lawn and garden show, you shouldn't your Chiropractor either.

Headaches, one of the most frustrating things a patient can have. They can consume your life. Patients try the gambit of pills, rubs, oils; you name it you can buy it. Doctors order X-rays, MRI’s, CT’s and various test. Rarely do they diagnose the problem that causes the headache. This leaves the patient wondering the cause of the headaches and living with the pain.

At our office we go back to the first test and x-rays ordered and most often we find the cause. Unfortunately it is simple and just ignored. Physicians are not taught that this simple finding can cause patients such terrible headache.

Straightening of the normal lordodic curve of the neck. God intended for our necks to be curved slightly backwards. When we lose that curve we get headaches. When the curve is restored the headaches diminish.

I utilize a chiropractic technique called SOT and combine it with McKenzie extension exercises at home. The results are remarkable. If you have headaches you don’t have to live with them, call our office today. See if we can help. We are always ready to answer your questions.

We do acupuncture for smoking cessation. This involves using very small acupuncture needles or press needles that are applied to the ear. They hurt just a very tiny bit. They stimulate points that help the patient with nicotine cravings. Its easy and it helps a lot of people stop the habit.

As one lady told me today, " it's much cheaper than smoking."
