KT Tape Chiropractic

KT tape and my experience.

I first used KT tapping in 1996.  I was excited about the possibilities it had for my patients, they  seemed excited as well.  However in 1996 there was only one type of KT tape you could purchase.  So I had to cut every strip, I’m a lefty chiropractor and we lefty chiropractors are not great with scissors, the process was slow and the tape was expensive.  Insurance did not cover the procedure or the tape.  The quality of the tape was poor and often would come off quickly.  There was no water proof tape, athletes did not care for the tape as it would come off when they needed it the most or at times get in the way.

Patients also were not thrilled with the prospect of paying for the tape out of pocket and it is hard to do on yourself.   As time has passed more tapping options did become available and this did been a help, but many of the complex shoulder taping systems were still very expensive, five to ten dollars per application.  So my utilization as well as many other chiropractors has been not that great; until now.

A company called KT has simplified the tape, every roll is pre-cut and uniform, the tape is very high quality and you can buy it at the big box stores.  So I am hopeful that I can direct more of my patients to it.  

Although there is still no hard studies to the efficacy of KT tape, just yesterday I had a patient who has been experiencing headaches for a long time find great relief with the cervical taping regimen.  The best part of this story is she was able to get the tape on her own and her husband was able to apply it.  He did a great job. 

I am in hopes that the decrease in the expense and the simplification of the tape will help this chiropractor and other physicians, orthopedist, etc. give patients the great results they can get with KT taping.
